What Is Sepsis?

Among the numerous fatal disorders, Sepsis is a medical emergency and a deadly disease. It is a bacterial disease and caused due to chemicals. When a germ infects the body, then the body releases certain chemicals to fight against the germs. These chemicals released by the immune system to fight against infection enters the blood and causes inflammation. These chemicals spread in the whole body through blood. This inflammation results in either leaking or blood clotting. This should be adequately treated as this can lower blood pressure. It is a severe condition. About 258,000 people are killed due to sepsis.

 

What Is Septicemia?

Septicemia is the mixing of bacteria in the blood. It is actually a bacterial infection. Septicemia results in sepsis. This disease can start at different organs or parts of the body. This is also known as blood poisoning. This is also a deadly disease. In this, blood carries bacteria and its intoxication to all the body parts. We can call septicemia early stage of sepsis. Moreover, different kinds of bacterias can enter the bloodstream. Their entry makes the situation worse.

Any infection can result in sepsis. However, following bacteria or diseases are likely to end in sepsis.

  • Kidney infection
  • Abdominal infection
  • Blood infection
  • Pneumonia

The above disease will not always attack the victim. There are several conditions in which one is likely to get this. Those are

  • Excessive usage of antibiotics. This would reduce their immunity and positive reaction towards medicines.
  • Immunity reduces with age. So senior citizens are likely to get this disease.

On the other hand, septicemia is a severe infection. It leaves its bacteria in the blood. Then that bacteria are carried to other parts of the body. The most common causes of septicemia are:

  • Kidney infection
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Lung infection

People of very young and old age are likely to have sepsis. Weak immunity will also result in this disease. Even steroid injects may result in blood poisoning.

 

What Are Their Symptoms

There are several symptoms of this disease. Moreover, these symptoms start quickly. The common symptoms are:

  • Increase in heart rate
  • Red spots on the body
  • Breathing fastly
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Low body temperature
  • Low Blood pressure
  • Diarrhea

As we know, septicemia, if not treated, will result in sepsis. If it’s not treated immediately, will result in sepsis shocks or even death. Shallow blood pressure is the result of sepsis and is known as  sepsis shocks. 

 

How To Test Sepsis And Septicemia

As this is a bacterial infection which runs through the blood into the body, so a blood test is occurred to diagnose sepsis and septicemia. Furthermore, an abnormal quantity of white blood cells can indicate the presence of this infection. Moreover, tests are done to know the exact reasons. However, treatment should begin before results came. Besides the blood test, the doctor may ask for a urine test. Wound and respiratory secretions can be helpful too.

How To Treat Sepsis and Septicemia?

Here it should be noted that sepsis is treatable. However, it is curable only if diagnosed in its early stages. First and foremost solution is to control heartbeat, and stabilize breathing. Moreover, medication is their treatment. Antibiotics and intravenous are required to cure the disease. Vasopressors is there to improve blood pressure. Surgery can be done to remove the source of infection, removal of pus, and removing clots.

Is Septicemia Contagious

People usually consider the nature of septicemia is contagious. However, it is not a contagious disease. It won`t spread by interacting with the patient. It is felt to be contagious due to infection. However, contamination of nature is different. The disease is inside the body.

Moreover, it is treatable and recoverable. About 40% of patients can recover from this disease. Further, a patient can recover 100%.

Are Sepsis And Bacteremia Same

Bacteremia VS. Septicemia

Sepsis and bacteremia are usually interchangeable terms. However, they are not the same. Both are blood diseases with different intensity. Bacteremia may not be dangerous. It can be the existence of any bacteria in the blood. Bacteremia is not as fatal as is sepsis. The bacteria releases in the bloodstream as a result of bacteremia may be due to brushing the teeth.

  • Sepsis is the existence of dangerous bacteria in the bloodstream. This existence will result in inflammation. Sepsis is a terrible disease.

 

Bacteremia VS. Septicemia VS. Toxemia

We may call bacteremia a peaceful existence of bacteria in the bloodstream. It is not as dangerous like septicemia. The bacteria in bacteremia is not toxic. Moreover, it`s toxication is not in the blood. Furthermore, it is resolvable on its own, whereas septicemia needs medical treatment for removal. Toxemia is toxic material which runs in the bloodstream. Pregnant ladies usually faces toxemia. Toxemia usually raises blood pressure.
